Services offered by Northeast Texas Equine Services
At Northeast Texas Equine Services, we offer complete health care for our local client's horses, AND we excel at Sports Medicine and Lameness. Dr Keith Taraba has extensive experience detecting sub-clinical lameness and identifying the problem horse that less-experienced vets may find it difficult to diagnose. When it comes to reproduction, we will refer you out to another practice, that is just not our thing!!! But here at Northeast Equine, we feel it is better to be great at something, than mediocre at everything.
When you bring your horse for an exam to our clinic or meet us at a barrel race, Dr Keith will ask you the basic history on your horse and how you noticed something may be amiss. This is your opportunity to be very clear on your goals for your horse and what you expect him to do with you. Are you trying to get through the next month with your Futurity horse or are you expecting your horse to last another 10 years at a competitive level for your children? Honesty with yourself is key for allowing us to help you meet your goals!!!
Then he will begin by palpating the legs and musculo-skeletal system looking for signs of pain. He has performed well over 10,000 lameness exams and has had the opportunity to follow the same horses week after week on the racetrack. This has allowed him to develop a sensitive feel that allows him to detect most lameness within a short period of time as well as determine the extent of the injury. At this point, Dr Keith may move on to observing your horse while moving or request further diagnostics, such as Xrays or Ultrasound, if clarification is needed.
Exam and Consultation: $55.00, Extended Exam and Consultation $85.00, Recheck Exam: $25.00
At Northeast Equine, we offer Digital Radiography, that allows detection of changes in bony structures and Ultrasound, with which Dr Keith can detect changes in soft tissue. This equipment will allow him to evaluate, head, limbs, spinous processes of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, neck and cervical vertebrae, and limited abdomen via rectal palpation. The majority of the time, radiographs will be used to determine joint health and bony structures of the legs amd ultrasound will be used to evaluate soft tissues of the leg, such as tendons and ligaments.
Radiographs: $25.00 each, Radiograph Set-up Fee: $25.00 (on-site), $50.00 (off-site), Ultrasound: $60.00 per limb
This is where you will get an ear full. Dr Keith Taraba believes very strongly that a balanced foot is the foundation of any performance horse, and "if the feet aren't right, we can spend a lot of your money injecting joints and never fixing the problem." He believes that 99% of horses should be trimmed so that the coffin bone is parallel with the ground and that there is just as much shoe in front of the coffin bone as there is behind. What he frequently finds is horses that are trimmed heel high, and the shoe is slid to the front and a sore horse connected to the feet. He does not have a huge opinion on what shoes are on your horse, as long as the foot is balanced, that is left up to the farrier.
The farrier Dr Keith works very closely with is Mike Berry of Kerens, TX. There are many farriers out there and there are a few talented farriers as well, but Mike Berry and Dr Keith Taraba, almost always see eye to eye on how a horse should be shod, which is very rare to find. How many times do the farrier and the vet argue about what to do with the feet, NOT at our Clinic
